On paper this sounds right up my alley (black/death metal loaded with cosmic horror, allegedly echoing with Rudimentary Peni-style anguish…), but as with so many things in life, the reality is more disappointing than what the imagination conjured. Ulthar instead deal in spindly metal that’s caught between two inhospitable worlds, providing neither the trachea-stomping crunch of death metal nor the caustic, world-searing hate of black metal’s best outliers. It’s serviceable enough and there’s certainly more than a whiff of sulphuric potential, but right here, right now I’m gonna pass and stick to stuff like Thantifaxath when I’m in dire need of a desolate fix like this.
