Vanity - Evening Reception - LP (2018)

Labels: Beach Impediment
Review by: Alex Deller

First time I’ve actually heard Vanity, and they’re pretty darn good. For whatever reason I was expecting something tough and New York-y, but ‘Evening Reception’ pulls from another place entirely with its bright, ringing chords and MOJO-reading sensibilities. Keith Richards’ craggy shadow looms undeniably large when it comes to the driving, ballsy swagger of the riffing, but you also get the fey whimsicality of Love, the proudly OTT strut of the New York Dolls and muddleheaded washes of 90s indie thrown into the mix as well. Despite the well-trodden influences there’s a lot of depth and a lot to dig into, and the end result come across almost like those maudlin later Reigning Sounds records might have sounded had Greg Cartwright grown up reading the NME in the 90s.
