The Hidden Chord - Suicide Note To Myself - 7

Labels: Blood of the Young
Review by: Andy Malcolm

White vinyl released on the mighty Blood of the Young this time for the previously faultless Hidden Chord. Two songs, as usual, packaged nicely in a card sleeve. Unfortunately, they totally let themselves down on title track, “Suicide Note To Myself”. A bit of a departure from their 60’s influenced rock and roll sound, it’s more of a medium paced indie rocker that appears to be a little off key. I’m not sure if it’s the recording or the song itself, but this really doesn’t click with me at all apart from a nice toe-tapping chorus.

At the midway point of this review, I will take the traditional step of letting you know, in case you have forgotten, that this band features an ex-member of Ordination of Aaron. Thankyou for your attention, the review will now continue.

B-side “Last Word” is more enjoyable, and a much more traditional slice of Hidden Chord rockage. Lo-fi, slightly garagey, resplendent in it’s 60’s rock influences, mixed up with a few more modern stylings, such as the slightly more complex bass work. It has a great chanty chorus and the whole thing is bouncy, upbeat and endearing, though not really as good as their best stuff form the first two 7″.

I hope this 7″ is a mere blip, and that their album is as great as I am hoping it to be. Check out their other stuff before deciding that you want this one.
