A-Set - Songs From the Red Room - CD (2000)

Review by: Alex Deller

One-man, lo-fi indie pop from Albert Menduno, ex of screamy emo thrashers Mohinder. Here he kicks out some downbeat numbers, some choppy ones and furnishes them vocals that occasionally remind me of perennial childhood favourite Henry’s Cat. Occasionally like Weezer without the ‘oomph’ (a terrifying prospect – surely taking away their ‘oomph’ would leave us with just two sugar lumps, a jelly bean and a wisp of candyfloss…), Modest Mouse without the quirk and the Pixies without the, uhh, brilliance. Pleasant enough sunny weather listening for sure, just never likely to be any sort of major squeeze. Back to the drawing board, eh, Menduno?
