Bit of a funny one, this, because while Kolossor are generally just alright they still have enough going on to make them stand out. The overriding influence – and the one that renders them merely adequate – are the stoner/sludge tropes that were perfected by Sleep, High On Fire et al and ridden into the ground by the dully derivative likes of Conan. Amid this, though, are glimmers of something a bit more feral and interesting. At times I’m minded of a less out-there Eagle Twin, and others a stumpy, spongey-sounding kind of grunge a la Tad, Nirvana circa ‘Bleach’ or a heavy metal Mudhoney. Whether this came about by accident or by design I couldn’t possibly say, but it’s an interesting enough mix that I’ll try to follow up to see where they go next even if I don’t necessarily return to this release.
