This is a band I want to hear more of, but this 4 track seven will do the trick for now. The Coathangers are a bunch of girls making raucous, new wave rock and roll with a focus on fun. On the a-side, we start with the grimy “Never Wanted You”, where the organ takes centre stage. “Spider Hands” again utilises organ and slows the pace down to barely crawl along before at the end it ups the ante and the pace and gets rather scary. Over on the flip, “Tripod Machine” is definitely the pick of the bunch on offer on this 45, it kicks off with a ridiculous cheerleader style intro and eventually breaks into yelping and the rhythm getting an immense groove on in a hurry. Tambourine in there too. This is stupid, regressive fun of the kind that I am really enjoying lately. The final song kicks off with them screaming “LEAVE MY SHIT ALONE! DON’T TOUCH MY SHIT!” and a keyboard riff based on a telephone ringing. LOVING IT! Final line: “Oh hey Jessica. FUCK YOU!”
If you are enjoying things lately such as the Sceptres and other stuff of such an ilk that I haven’t heard yet, I think you could find plenty to enjoy here. Deceptively simple, but with a whole lot of ideas, freshness and juvenile delinquency. Plenty to be excited about here, do check this out, I can’t think of an explanation as to why you should, but sometimes, who needs an excuse…
