Self Defense Family - You Are Beneath Her - 7

If you’ve ever wondered what End Of A Year or Self Defense or Self Defense Family would sound like with someone singing who could hit the notes and carry a nice melody then now is your chance. This is four tracks from “You Are Beneath Me” re-recorded without Patrick Kindlon on vocals. This time, Caroline Corrigan takes the lead and if you follow this band as closely as I do then chances are you may well have heard these versions of the songs already as they were hanging around on the internet a while back. “Eric Hall”, which I always wished was about the jumped-up 90s football agent, is given the acoustic treatment but the other three tracks sound like End Of A Year (obviously!) but with melodic and calm female vocals. Soundwise the melodies jump out and the feel isn’t far off the “I’ve Got An Idea…” track that appeared on the Mixed Signals compilation last year. I’m all for hearing a different take on End Of A Year songs and Caroline’s vocals are great. A couple of these tracks actually sound better suited to Caroline’s vocals. There is more to come too with a duets 12inch coming out later this year. It’s hard to keep up with everything this band does but I’ll be doing my best to keep track.
