Utarid - de[ad]mo - Tape (2004)

Labels: self released
Review by: Nadia Almashoor

There is hope for screamo in Malaysia.

We have The Accused. We have the Unexpected Sphinx Theory. And now we have Utarid. Working really hard within the past year, they have definitely built a name for themselves. Playing various shows within and interstate, Utarid are also going to be featured on the “˜This is Your Life’ compilation on Switzerland’s Ape Must Not Kill Ape Records.

What we have here is a very nice cassette limited to 100, packed in brown paper filled with a lyrics booklet (check it out! typewriter fonts and all!) and a silkscreened patch. This brings to mind the Last Forty Seconds demo tape and if you’re one of those lucky people who owns it (like me. haha.) then you’d know what I’m talking about. Emo with a capital E.

Musically, they know their emo/screamo history way too well. And all the elements are evident in the 4 tracks provided. You’ve got the pounding of Orchid, the dark brooding gloom of The Red Scare, early Ebullition hardcore meandering, Level-Plane worshipping, rarara! spazz on the stage, blood on the floor. Pieces of the jigsaw puzzle forms into a skull at the Witching Hour.

This demo may be way out of print but that doesn’t mean you can’t do anything about it.
Get it on.
