Ulises Lima are a fairly new Spanish emo band containing ex members of Ciudad Del Cabo and Costacurta. This scene reminds me a lot of the Exeter scene in the UK over the last few years, whereby just a few people came together and played in a multitude of different overlapping bands (Structures, The Tumer Street Conspiracy, We leave At Dawn, and now Kids Return), all of which had a degree of originality whilst being tentatively labelled 90s style emo.
Ulises Lima draw some comparisons with the members’ previous bands but it seems the style of music has mellowed out over time. This album is much less harsh than Costacurta were and much less desperate sounding than Ciudad Del Cabo. Having said these characteristics still appear to some degree in the music. There are sung parts and shouted parts. It gets a little bit samey over the course of the album but when they nail it in places it’s tremendous. The same goes for the guitar riffs – there’s some overlap on different songs but in places they are amazing.
My favourite track is the final one, ‘Shit Happens’. Awesome introductory riff here, which they know is good so build the whole song around, along with one other riff. It’s simple but awesome, the vocals are spot on here too. Overall a solid album which I think fans of the aforementioned bands will be into. Without meaning to be harsh what I’d like to see is the band step up the quality control a bit now, as they’ve got huge potential to make some blinding records.
