Crow Bait feature members of Iron Chic and Sister Kisser and if you’re familiar with either of those bands that’ll give you a good clue as to what they sound like. It’s melodic, gruff punk again – in fact, I’m not sure I have ever heard a gruffer voice than the main vocalist on opening track ‘Tragic Fall’. “Gruffer” – is that even a word? The gruffness levels are toned down a notch on the rest of the EP. It’s also slightly lo-fi especially compared to Iron Chic. ‘Tragic Fall’ has a Dinosaur Jr.-style riff going through it but is mainly a Latterman-style melodic punk song. The second song starts off like Superchunk and then again goes back to the gruff punk. Anyway, I’m not going to kid you on that there is anything new here or anything that will convince you that you suddenly like this kind of music if you’re not into it already. You know the drill – beards all over the shop, band and friends shouting together into the mics, fists in the air etc….the type of band that slots in seamlessly at Fest. It’s a solid EP but doesn’t match the catchiness or big choruses of Iron Chic. Whilst I like it I’m not finding it particularly memorable and not sure how often I will come back to it.
