“Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent.”
I first read these words on an enormous wooden tablet bolted to a wall inside the headquarters of the export division of the TATA Group in western India in 1995. Attributed to Calvin Coolidge, the quote has remained somewhere in my head ever since and anytime I have ever felt like abandoning anything I once felt worthwhile, I’ve always returned to them.
There’s every chance the members of Lesbian Bed Death are not acquainted with Silent Cal’s words, but any group of people with this level of self-belief is unlikely to ever need them; here they come again with a fourth album of glam/punk/metal, which will no doubt find an audience irrespective of what I or anyone else on these snooty websites have to say about it.
I hate this music, in the same way I hated the music on their other albums, but I have a newfound respect for the people who created it “” long may they reign.
Lesbian Bed Death, you are the embodiment of Coolidge’s words and I salute you.
