Instigators - Phoenix - CD (2016)

Labels: Boss Tuneage
Review by: Oli Saunders

Yep you’ve guessed it, it’s another retro rerelease from BT. I tend to feel out of my depth reviewing these because whilst I appreciate Minor Threat like any other normal person I don’t really have the faintest about other hardcore punk from that era; particularly more niche avenues like this. Early influences were Crass and Flux of Pink Indians – that will get some of you interested. Not surprisingly they are not in the same league but the simple structure of the drums and guitars are effective behind some rather unique and interesting vocals. The second half is ten tracks from a gig in Berlin, whose recording is very clean, though this results in them sounding a bit too similar to the first half.
