Star Tropics - Lost World - LP (2017)

Kind of jangly, wistful and dreamy indie pop stuff here from Chicago, and it’s on the poppier end of the spectrum with hints of The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart about it. Also, the guitar on the opening instrumental track has something very Smiths going on and it was apparently a chance meeting thanks to a Smiths B-side that brought this band together in the first place. Not sure how that worked entirely and I’d be interested to know which song it was too. Their sound is quite light and melancholy with gentle vocal interplay between Loren and Nikki who share the vocal duties and blend nicely when they pair up together. Nice stuff. I’d pick out the infectious “Another Sunny Day”, “Wildfire”, which has a lovely guitar line running through it, and, towards the end, “Summer Rain” as my highlights.
