Holding Patterns - Endless - LP (2019)

Labels: To Lose La Track – Vested Interest
Review by: MH

This is the return of 3/5 of Crash of Rhinos. Streamlined you might say but there’s little to suggest there’s less here in numbers as it’s a powerful record and the rhythm section still has a huge punch. Things kicks off with the solemn restraint of brief instrumental track “Glow”, and there’s a couple more of these subdued instrumentals dotted around the record, but “At Speed” is where things really get going. This was the first track they put up on Bandcamp last year and it’s a good indicator as to their sound. The tracks have plenty of room to breathe and explore with most tracks knocking on towards 5 minutes and above. The three of them trade vocals and complement each other superbly on tracks like the melodic “No Accident” which surfs the crest of a wave and there is such patience in moments like the build-up before the point the drums come back in towards the end of the slower “First Responder”, and the lengthier, Mogwai-esque section where it drifts away during the weary and downtrodden resilience of “House Fire”. A great song by the way. At close to an hour long it’s a lengthy LP but there’s not a second wasted. Absolutely majestic.
