Wavelets - Athaletics - LP (2012)

Labels: Tiny Engines
Review by: Kimmi

I guess I have always had a thing for emo music and maybe that’s why I dig this album so much. It’s one
of those albums that you want to listen to over and over simply because it’s that good. You find yourself
singing along, clinching your fist and shaking it a little to the timing. You’re singing because you mean it,
not because it’s one of those albums you play when you are in the mood to sing. I’ve been listening to
Athaletics for a few days now and I’m still not sick of it. Honestly, I don’t see how you can get sick of it.
The instrumental aspect of it is great and mixing noodley riffs with cleaner vocals with a hint of raspiness
equals a perfect mix of emo-orgcore-punk rock. Not to mention the group vocals are perfectly planted.

Some of the lyrics really focus on feeling heavy, like a burden has been placed within because of rifts in
a relationship such as in Luke Moses Loves Stale Food, which is a prime example of a relationship where
one person is hiding, not letting the other one in completely. And I’m sure we can all relate to the line in
Cam Taylor Is So American Kushball Right Now: “We both said a few things I’m not sure you meant.” If
you’ve ever been in a relationship, you would appreciate this album.

No, this is not my favorite record to date, but it is a really good album and I look forward to hearing
more.
