Major Leagues - Weird Season - 10

Labels: self released
Review by: MH

Major Leagues are a Brisbane band and their sound shows as much of an appreciation of bands like The Breeders, Best Coast and Belly as it does of shoegaze as well as an older 60s garage pop sound in some of the vocal harmonies. Guitars are distorted and fuzzed up and the vocals drift over the top as the two guitarists and bass player take their turn on vocals. There are five strong songs here starting with “Silver Tides”. “Feel” is a track I’d been keen to hear on record as they have been closing their set with this one amidst a load of feedback on the few times I’ve seen them play. It’s probably the one that veers closest to a 90s shoegaze sound and my favourite track on here. Then follow three tracks that have been available previously on Bandcamp. First up is “Endless Drain” and it remains a simple and hugely poppy number that is as catchy as anything else I’d heard in all of 2013. Give this a go if you are into any of the bands I’d mentioned and want to hear a poppier take on that sound.
